Trek & Treat, Nepal
Trek & Treat is a humanitarian eye care initiative founded in 2019 by Vision Together Nepal, combining high-altitude treks with essential eye care services for remote Nepalese communities lacking road access. By bringing teams of ophthalmologists, optometrists, and volunteers on multi-day treks, isolated villages in regions such as Dolpo, Mugu, Darchula, and Solukhumbu are able to receive eye care who would otherwise wait years or never receive it. Led by optometrist Sakar Subedi and supported by Rose Charities, the initiative conducts screening camps followed by surgical camps to treat cataracts, distribute prescription spectacles, and provide medications to patients. Since its inception, Trek & Treat has treated approximately 4,000 patients, performed nearly 200 cataract surgeries, and distributed around 1,200 spectacles across some of Nepal's most challenging terrain, including camps conducted at altitudes exceeding 5,000 meters. The program's long-term vision includes establishing spectacle banks and community eye centers in rural areas to create sustainable, locally-staffed eye care infrastructure that can serve these communities year-round.
