The annual Haitian “Karnival”, a carnival similar to Mardi Gras, is a season when people from all over the world travel to Haiti to join Haitians country-wide dancing to music and partying in the streets. “Karnival” is a festive and colorful event but also accompanied by alcohol, drugs, unprotected sex, and even violence.
To provide Haitian teenagers a safe alternative to “Karnival”, some institutions like schools, churches, or other community groups organize a retreat for youth during the weekend of “Karnival”.
With the “Espwa ak Kris” committee, we have been busy planning our first YOUTH RETREAT the weekend of Friday, February 28th to Wednesday, March 5th, 2014 for teens in Miragoane, Haiti.
This retreat will be an exciting time. Activities will encourage the youth to explore their creative talents such as singing, participating in dramas, sharing jokes and to test their general knowledge in fun, competitive question and answer games. They will be kept active with sports like soccer, running, stretching and calisthenics. The teens will also receive education about health, hygiene, safe sex, caring for the environment, and how to be a responsible citizen (general and legal responsibilities).
There has been much enthusiasm in the planning process. The retreat will take place in a nearby community, Les Cayes. Many of the youth have never travelled outside of Miragoane so this will be an new adventure for them! A medical student and some lawyers, pastors, and teachers have volunteered to help out during the retreat, particularly at the education sessions.
Each teenager will be required to pay the equivalent of $15 USD to cover travel costs. We are raising funds for the meals and accommodation during the five day retreat, a total of $30 USD per youth ($20 USD for meals and $5 USD for accommodation).
Would you consider sending one or more Haitian teens to this upcoming fun and educational retreat?
Our goal is for 200 youth to attend.
So far enough funds have been raised for only 100 to participate.
