Yesterday I met Mao Mengly and Nhor Dany, the two students that are the first recipients of the FDCC Cambodia – Rose Charities Mekhala Education Sponsorship Project. They are both just beginning their second year at Chea Sim University of Kamchay Mear (CSUK) in Prey Veng Town, studying for their Bachelor Degree in Accounting.

Mengly and Dany both told me that they were close to dropping out after their first year of study as they couldn’t find a way to support the costs of their fees. The University had allowed them to begin their studies without paying their first year fees provided that they were paid before being allowed to enter their second year – we were so lucky to build a strong relationship with Mr Sok Rady, Executive Director of FDCC and Director of CSUK who was able to quickly identify the students that were most in need of financial aid.

Mengly and Dany have just received their Academic Transcripts for the end of their first year of study and both achieved outstanding results for the 10 subjects they completed. A mixture of B’s and B+’s for both students, with an A each for their “Communication” subject.

These students show a strong commitment to study, with Dany traveling a 6 hour round trip by bicycle each time she comes to Prey Veng town from her native Ba Phnom village for a weekend of study. Her friend helps to pay for the room they share each Saturday night in town so that they can study at the University both Saturday and Sunday and then return to their village during the week to help their families. Mengly is lucky to have a friend who gives him a lift to University each weekend on the back of his motorbike.

We are currently recruiting our second two recipients for the 2010-2011 Academic Year. We have raised enough money for these two students’ first year of University study but still require funds for their second, third and fourth years.
